Hawai’i has a magical way of leaving its’ mark on all who get to experience it. Whether you were born and raised here, came here for college, for a job, or to retire, living in Hawai’i is something that moulds your way of being in the world, into something a little bit different. Locals Only is a show of 13 photographers who are either from the islands or call Hawai’i their home. This crew of artists live and work in New York, Japan, Maui, Hawai’i Island, on the North Shore of Oahu, and in Honolulu. They work as photographers, videographers, producers, stylists and designers. Besides their passion for photography as an art form, they share the common thread of aloha and their deep connection to the special place that is Hawai’i.

Each photograph is a limited edition original print in a series of ten. All printing is done here at Paul Strouse Photographer and Studio with pigment archival inks on museum quality archival acid free matte paper. Each print, with proper handling and care, will last a lifetime and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that is signed and numbered by the Photogrpaher.

This piece is from a new series in progress titled UNAPPARENT that seeks to reflect the myriad perceptions of the AAPI community as its members respond to escalated, but not new, incidences of hate and violence. The work also aims to speak to the violence directly, ask what it means to be safe, explore a community’s options in the face of discrimination as well as a society’s responsibility to protect all of its members, and address the complex distortions and realities of American assimilation.

** 50% of the artist’s share of the proceeds from every print sale will be used to support non-profit organizations working to combat violence and discrimination against Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander communities.
